Damp smell, room was freezing cold to the point where I was shaking cold psychically, could be made into a great cheap Motel but owners clearly lack ambition to improve
Noteworthy details: Don't stay here

Not a nice place, next to a busy petrol station and a the busy A6. Also frequented by migrants.

We visited on the 11th August 2023.
This place does exactly what it says on the tin. it's a budget hote, and it ticked the box for our short visit, a very reasonable price for 2 people.
The staff were very helpful in our experience. I emailed them to request for an early check-in, which was granted for a small extra cost which was worth it as we were very early. Tip: use their email address on website, not the contact form.
The room had a TV and there was good working wifi in the room, good enough to work from there. The bed was comfortable and the linen was clean. The bathroom ok, the shower was working as expected. I didn't notice any damp in the bedooom or bathroom when I checked.
The girl on reception opened the bar for us as well when we requested a drink, she didn't have to as they were not normally open for another hour and a half, but she accomodated us which we appreciated
The quality and price of the drinks were up to scratch, 2 pints of lager and a G&T and everyone was happy with what they got.
The Mercury is not the Ritz and definitely a budget hotel, but it met expectations for us. The room was as expected and I could not fault the staff who were very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to accomodate us. If I was in Westhoughton again, I would stay here.
Walkability: 15 minute awlking distance from Westhoughton station. Easy walk to town centre. The Rosa is also nearby for food with another coffee shop the otehr direction 2 minutes away.

Greeted by everyone's room keys in a envelope with their names on. Didn't see a single staff member whilst there.
Room very dated and worn, mold but the favourite thing was the dirty shorts left in the wardrobe.
Smell of cannabis throughout the corridor to the second room.
So service was not there as no staff, rooms unclean. Will not return

I liked the hosts. Unfortunately they ran out of soap but they gave me more shampoo satchets to compensate. Hot water was fine. Unfortunately heating was on timer so couldn't switch it on late at night when I arrived

I tried to have a shower twice at separate times of day and the water was freezing. Tried to call reception repeatedly to speak to someone about it and they don’t pick up the phone for hours on end. Finally we were able to speak to someone on reception and we were told they only put the hot water on for an hour in the morning and again later in the afternoon. I have never stayed anywhere before where you cannot have a wash at a time you choose yourself, it’s just a basic necessity in a hotel to be able to have instant hot water. The building has a terrible smell - damp, dirt, I’m not sure what but it is so unpleasant. The rooms are completely run down and dated. There was no central heating in our room, just a cheap heater which is not sufficient during winter months so we cold during the night. I would advise anyone who needs to stay near by to go to the Premier Inn on Middlebrook, even if you have to pay a little extra. We decided to leave one night early even though the room was non refundable.

The attitude of the staff during the night is the worst I have come across in any hotels I have stayed at. Asked for an extra pillow 4 times over a 2 hour period only to be told we could not have any. The room was right next to the function room so there was no chance of getting to sleep until that was over. The smell of the hotel is gross as soon as you walk through the door and the rooms are very run down. 100% would not be coming back and do not recommend

Just a terrible place to stay. Agree with all comments about the smell of the place but worse for me was no hot water! What is that about. I stayed here as I had an interview nearby but I had to boil the kettle to have a wash in the sink, luckily I have been having vim Hoff showers so I finished that off with a freezing cold shower, he would be proud! I didn't even see any staff, bar not open but luckily next to a garage for dinner. No breakfast, saw something about cereal at 10am but thats practically lunch time and would doubt it exists. Pretty much expected to find zombies outside my door when leaving. No idea what time they grace you with hot water but there was none there at 7am when I tried and still none at 8am as I was leaving!
